- What to Expect at your Visit

What you will experience at our clinic:
When you arrive at PHS, you are greeted by one of our Hearing Care Coordinators. She will provide you with our intake forms, and ask to see your health insurance cards and driver's license (for identification purposes). You can take a seat in one of our comfortable "living room-type" chairs or peruse our lending library bookshelf (fiction and non-fiction). We pride ourselves on being on time, so we promise you will not have to wait very long.
Once the paperwork is completed, either Dr. Ward or Dr. Hopkins will escort you and any family members to the examination room. There, a detailed case history of your communication difficulites will be obtained. It is important that we understand where you are having hearing difficulites, the environments you are typically in, your social habits and activity level, and your expectations. When the case history is finished, the hearing evaluation will begin.
- Audiological Evaluations and Diagnosis of Hearing Loss
Our hearing evaluation is thorough and reliable. We will examine your ears, remove any excess earwax, evaluate your middle ear system (eardrum, bones and muscles), test your hearing, and evaluate how well you understand speech. These tests will permit us to diagnose the type and degree of hearing loss in each ear and make rehabiliative or medical recommendations. A detailed description of your hearing loss, and its affect on communication, will be provided. If deemed necessary, a discussion on hearing aids and your prognosis with amplification will come next.
- Explanation of Findings and Recommendations
The audiological test battery will result in a diagnosis of the type and degree of hearing loss in both ears. A detailed description of your hearing loss will be provided, and ramifications on social and emotional well-being will be discussed. Recommendations for rehabilitation are made, and may include 1) amplification, 2) a medical referral and/or 3) a follow-up evaluation in the future.
- Hearing Aid Demonstrations
If hearing loss is confirmed, and no further testing or medical follow-up is deemed necessary, you will have the opportunity to experience the latest technology in hearing aids. Demonstration hearing aids will be programmed to match your hearing loss so that you can listen to them both in our quiet office and the noisy environment outside (near 14 Mile road). A discussion of various hearing instrument options follows the demonstration, and a prescription for a specific hearing instrument rehabilitation program is provided.
