Hearing Aid Styles

There are many styles of hearing aids available today...

delta hearing aids

Designed to sit snuggly behind your ear, Delta's "hi tech" design lets you be completely discreet. Delta blends in beautifully with your skin and hair, but demands attention and admiration in your hand.

hearing aidsITE: In-The-Ear Fills up the entire ear opening. Largest of the custom types, therefore, also the strongest in-the-ear. Batteries typically last 10-14 days. Large enough to fit advanced features, such as directional microphones.

1/2 Shell units are typically 1/2 the size of the ITE. Battery is a little smaller, and average life is 7-10 days. Directional microphones are available on this model.

hearing aidsITC: In-The-Canal units require good dexterity and sensations in the hands since they are smaller and are not as easy to orient for insertion. Battery typically lasts 7-10 days. Directional microphones are often not available due to space limitations.

hearing aidsCIC: Completely-In-the-Canal are the tiniest hearing aids made. They require a "removal string" due to their small size and the fact that they fit deeply into the ear canal. CICs can be difficult to remove without the pull string. Directional microphones are not available due to space limitations. Advantages: small, normal phone use, reduced wind noise. Disadvantages: very small battery size (often last only 3-5 days), highest repair rate of all hearing aid styles, obtaining comfortable fit can be challenging, more likely to whistle due to less power capabilities, may need to resize after any weight loss or gain.

hearing aidsBTE: Behind-The-Ear hearing aids are the largest hearing aids and they are very reliable. BTEs have the most circuit options and offer more power than custom made units. BTEs rest on the behind your ear. They are connected to the ear canal via custom-made plastic tubing and an earmold. The earmold is usually custom made from an ear impression to perfectly replicate the size and shape of your ear. Directional microphones are available on BTE units. In addition, a telecoil (special device to help you hear on telephone) is standard. The telecoil is not standard on any other hearing aid size.

Many people are resistant to BTE style at first because they think they will be too "noticable" and "bulky." But the majority of our patients quickly realize this is a misconception once we show them how light weight and cosmetic they have become. A large majority of our patients use BTE hearing aids for the power capability and the advanced featuers. We strongly encourage all of our patients to consider BTE since we feel the BTE will optimize hearing abilities better than the other size options.

Open Ear Mini BTE hearing aids are specifically designed for high frequency hearing loss. This device amplifies high frequency sounds without blocking the ear canal, resulting in more natural sound quality. The casing that sits behind the ear is incredibly small, and often is hard to see even on someone with short hair. The earbud attaches to a narrow pre-molded tube. Due to the small unit size and narrow tubing, open ear fittings have great cosmetic appeal; the hearing aid virtually disappears when properly worn.
