Cell phones were exempted from the 1988 Hearing Aid Compatibility Act. As a result, most hearing aid users could not use cell phones because of the interference caused with their hearing aids.
Since then, the hearing aid industry has made its products far more resistant to interference from cell phones. In August 2003, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced new guildlines for the development and sale of digital wireless telephones that are compatible with hearing aids.
Key components of the FCC ruling include:
(1) Starting September 2005, the five largest wireless carriers (Tier 1 companies) has to have at least four hearing aid-compatible models available or ensure at least 25% of hansets are hearing aid-compatible.
(2) By September 16, 2006, Tier 1 suppliers must have five models available for hearing aid users.
(3) By February 18, 2008, Tier 1 companies must ensrue half of their models are hearing aid-compatible.
(4) Consumers must be able to test cell phones in the store before purchase to determine if they are compatible with their hearing aids.
